Tony promoting the Workington constituency’s evident attractions to tourists

Few Parliamentary constituencies enjoy such rich cultural and geographical diversity as the incredibly scenic and historical constituency of Workington.

Parts of the town of Workington itself, situated at the mouth of the River Derwent on the Irish Sea, south of the Solway Firth, date back to Roman times and the Saturday market at Keswick, nestled between the immense mountain of Skiddaw and the serene lake of Derwentwater, has been going on since 1275 when Edward I granted the town its market charter.

We might say that the constituency is characterised by diverse land uses, from industry to fishing and farming, from centres of art and culture to sights of natural beauty and outdoor pursuits. The constituency has also borne witness to sporting success and an interesting electoral history.
